We used to do head gasket jobs all the time, but in the last 5-7 years many of those jobs went bad. Many shops won't even do LR valve jobs anymore. Why? This is a big issue for people with the original LR-Buick aluminum V8 engine - all the US market Defenders and Range Rovers to 2002 and Discovery I and II models through 2004.
Mar 17, 2010· From a practical perspective, going to a machine shop is like going to a marriage counselor. Seriously, and we're not trying to be funny here, but there is a relationship between what your goals are and what your pocketbook and equipment can produce. Like any good counselor, the machinist should help you navigate through the tough problematic areas between wants, needs and capabilities.
The head bolts need to be tightened in the correct sequence and set to the proper torque. They also need to have clean threads that aren't stretched or damage. The cylinder head surfaces and engine block also need to be smooth, clean, and flat. Any one of these factors, or a combination of them, can cause a blown head gasket.
Use a 40 grit cartridge to do most of the grinding then use a 80 grit cartridge to get a nice smooth finish. Step 5: Inspect the intake runners. Place the cylinder head bottom side upward and inspect the inside of the intake runners through the valve holes. Step 6: Remove any obvious unevenness. Grind away any sharp turns, crevices, valleys ...
The practice we're talking about here is using an abrasive pad in a drill to grind off gasket residue that may be stuck to the heads or block. The abrasive will certainly whiz the gasket debris right off, but it can also whiz off metal leaving a shallow depression, a dig or a groove that may create a sealing problem when the engine is put ...

Clean the engine head and valves thoroughly. You do not want to have any grinding paste left on the engine head. You can use a wet rag and water to clean up the engine head to remove the grinding compound. Then coat everything lightly with a bit of oil to prevent rust. Assemble your head in the reverse of the way you took it all apart.
Give the valve stem a light coat of engine oil before putting it in the guide. I use 5/30W, but it really shouldn't matter. Spread a bit of grinding compound onto the edge of the valve. Stick the Rubber Cup On the Valve Face. Once the valve is in the head, the next step is to wet the suction cup on the lapper and stick it on the valve face.
Now we go to just what to do so your daughter has a car. For us (me) to tell you the best route we need to know more about the rest of the car. The head gasket sits between the block and the cylinder head with its job being to thermally expand with the engine and seal coolant chambers, oil routing and the cylinders apart from each other.
"Normally, I would put a 6.200˝ rod in one of these engines," he says. "We went back to a 6.125˝ rod but they don't make that size rod for Ford, so we bought a Chevy rod. We did have to deal with the offset of the Chevy rod when we put it in the Ford engine.
Jul 04, 2006· Inspiring words from your engine builder, huh? In fairness to Brian, we pushed well beyond the limits of sanity on the head milling, that's what he was refering to. We made 480HP w/o NOS and 650 w/ NOS, all with a .485 lift cam and flat top pistons. The car will make its first passes in April, looks good on paper, can't wait to see it in action.
May 16, 2010· However most engine shops have a dedicated head machine, some of which use a grinding process and others a fly cutting process. The job can be done on a milling machine with a fly cutter provied the machine has enough travel to clear the length of the head and has a very rigid fly cutter with enough span to cover the breadth of the head.

Valve lash is the mechanical clearance in the valve train between camshaft and valve in an internal combustion engine. Valve lash is usually about 10/1,000 of an inch depending on the engine specifications. Valve lash is intended to provide the greatest amount of valve opening on the high point of the camshaft lobe ...
The engine head is made up of iron which can hold heat pretty well, and for long periods and without the proper cooling, the temperature would cause the internal parts to expand, causing them to stick as the parts in an engine are tightly fitted and sealed without any room for air or fuel to escape.
